Rami Malek plays Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the supplementary film Bohemian Rhapsody but the role was originally going to go to somebody else. Years ago, in the same way as the film was first entering development, Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to star as the lead singer, but recently Queen drummer Roger Taylor explained why Cohen left the project. Taylor says the actor, known primarily for comedy, didn't recognize the film, or the role, seriously. According to Taylor...
There was a lot of chat virtually Sacha and stuff. It was never essentially on. I don't think he took it seriously ample --- didn't recognize Freddie seriously enough. But I think, really, it's a long road, but we're at the end of it now
Looking back, it was virtually eight years ago in the same way as it was first announced that Sacha Baron Cohen would describe Freddie Mercury in a biopic virtually the band Queen. It was subsequently virtually five years ago that it was announced that Cohen had left the project.
Unfortunately, Roger Taylor doesn't enhance upon his statement, appropriately it's hard to understand what is intended by it. It's agreed legitimate that Sacha Baron Cohen is best known for comedic roles, appropriately perhaps the actor was planning upon playing Mercury in some sort of witty way. Freddie Mercury was agreed flamboyant and over-the-top as far afield as his stage persona goes, appropriately one could look how something in the same way as that might work.
It could also be that Cohen just didn't have enough money the movie much attention, and that was seen as not taking it seriously. even though that could straightforwardly be because the film straightforwardly wasn't that far afield along. The fact that it would recognize half a decade from the point Sacha Baron Cohen left the project for the movie to actually create it upon the screen, in accessory to the three years he was attached, shows that a lot of feint needed to be done.
Roger Taylor tells the associated Press that having Cohen recognize the Mercury role "was never essentially on." This is probably because the film was in such an obviously into the future permit that nobody had actually signed any contracts. Cohen may have expressed captivation and the producers may have been eager in getting him, but there wasn't ample set in rock for it to be more than that.
And based upon what Sacha Baron Cohen has said, that sounds in the same way as it may have been the case. The actor had previously declared that one of his issues in the same way as the movie was that, in the explanation he was given, Freddie Mercury died in the middle of the film and the rest of the explanation focused upon how the band handled the aftermath. That's not the explanation of Bohemian Rhapsody, appropriately straightforwardly things distorted exceeding the years.
After Sacha Baron Cohen left the project, Ben Whishaw was tapped to feint Freddie Mercury, even though he eventually left the project as capably to create room for Rami Malek, who plays the Queen lead singer in the supplementary film.
