I'm not grating to tell that a movie needs have a pre-existing fanbase to be successful, but it helps! That's why studios look for existing IPs to reboot or make into films; because it's less of a risk than starting from scratch. Aquaman and Black Panther are two of the highest grossing movies of 2018, and both of the films' respective guide characters were introduced ahead of time.
The fact that I felt that I had to tell who Morbius was earlier is an indicator of how tiny I think people know or care more or less him. It's not suitably much that he's a bad character, but he doesn't stand behind huge dogs behind Green Goblin or Doctor Octopus.
Of course, there could be various new factors that end happening helping Morbius in the long run, but the deck is stacked next to it. A lot of it depends upon who the ablaze of the cast is and what the movie actually looks like. It could be that the first poster in point of fact raises the hype, but we won't locate those things out for a long get older still.
